Growing Food in the Home Garden Beginners 1 Day Course at Lavistown House, Kilkenny

Would you like to live the good life and grow your own food but don’t know where to start?

​

Join Patrick Hunt for the first in a series of one day classes that will have you putting food on the table no matter what size of space you are working with. Patrick is an Architect turned organic home grower and setup his own business running Gardening and Environmental workshops in 2015. He works with schools, community groups, libraries, education centres and private individuals.

Day 1 March 28th 

​

In early spring join Patrick to learn about preparing your growing area and look at a variety of seasonal vegetables for sowing and planting. These will include tomatoes, salad crops, potatoes, onions and Broadbeans. We will explore the walled garden at Lavistown House for vegetables, fruit and beneficial flowers and examine various approaches for dealing with weeds and turning these into compost. After lunch we will construct a small no-dig raised wooden bed and plant this up.

Day 2 May 23rd

In late spring join Patrick to learn about growing carrots, beetroot, peas, runnerbeans and courgettes. This month we will look at protected cropping and planting combinations and techniques to prolong the harvest.  We will explore the walled garden at Lavistown House for vegetables fruit and flowers and after lunch focus on growing tomatoes.

Day 3 September 26th

​

In early autumn join Patrick to learn about harvesting and storage of vegetables. September is a time of abundance in the garden, it is also a time to prepare the garden for winter. We will explore the walled garden at Lavistown House for vegetables fruit and flowers. We will also be discussing vegetables to grow over the winter months and looking at a number of really worthwhile perennials vegetables.
